Influence of Experimental Hypo-and Hyper-Thyroidism on Female Reproductive Function

Abstract
It has already been proved that the thyroid hormone has a relationship with the gonadal physiology by many experiments. The thyroid hormone stimulates secretion of the luteinizing hormone but inhibits secretion ¢¥of the follicle stimulating hormone. Centers of the luteinizing hormone releasing factor and the thyrotropin releasing factor are so closely located at the hypothalamus that there may be a cross-reaction each other.
Observation of ovarian functions and histological changes of reproductive organs in the experimental hypo-and hyperthyroidism may be an interesting study. Normal female rats of body weight 150-200 gm were used for the observation of sexual cyclic changes and histology of reproductive organs. For the copper sulfate induction of ovulation, normal virgin rabbits of body weight 1.5-2.0 kg were used after quarantine of 2 or more weeks. .
The results of experiment are summarized as followings;
1) Sixteen female rats in the experimental hypothyroidism (Na¢¥31I 4. 5 mC per kg of body weight) showed persistent diestrus cycles and occlusive follicles with diminished luteal formation and destructive. change of endometrium. during first and second month of experiment. Cystic follicles and large corpus luteum were sometimes ovserved in the late month study.
2) Twenty female rats in the experimental hyperthyroidism (sodium liothyronine 0. 5 ug per day) showed no remarkable change.during early month of experiment. Prolongation of estrous cycles, occlusive follicles and destructive findings of endometrium were sometimes ovserved in the late month of experiment.
3) The induction of ovulation with copper sulfate (9. 0 cc of 0.1% solution) were supernormal in 5 rabbits medicated with the small dose of triiodothyronine (5 ug per day) but subnormal with large dose (10 ug per day).
4) Observation of 5 rabbits with the surgical thyroidectomy revealed nearly normal ovulation during the short term (10 days) but negative result in the long term after 5 weeks.
